Rumors Set Work

On February 2nd, 2013 I completed around 6 creative hours for my work as set crew. For this activity, I was a part of the crew in the play Rumors at Westlake Academy. For this play, we had to work with the small amount of space that we have in the Performance Hall, and make it into an exciting, yet spacious space for the actors to recite their lines, etc. We had to work hard to finish the set fast so that the actors could start rehersing on the set itself. To complete the task, we were to paint the dividers navy and then paint all the doors white. It was difficult to paint all the parts that the audience would see, and then leave the parts that the audience wouldn't see. It was also our job to decide where certain pieces looked best, and what made the stage actually look like a living room including a bar, and four doors leading to different rooms. I learned a lot about the different aspects of stage design. There are very specific places to put pieces and move them at angles to create space, but also allow the audience to see the picture you are trying to paint on stage. I found it very interesting, and my time as set crew was very beneficial in experiencing new things and applying them to my everyday life.
Below are a few pictures that show the work that we did on the set of Rumors. While it was hard work to get done in a short amount of time, we still had a lot of fun in the relationships we built with the actors as well. During this activity I really was able to realize what my strengths and weaknesses were. Which my strengths were probably to listen to the actors and place their input into what we were working on, but my weakness was more of the artisitc view of the stage. However, through undertaking these new challenges, I developed new skills like painting and stage design that I never knew before.
